Has humanity changed in 3000 years?
After reading part of The Iliad last night, I wonder, have human beings changed in the last 3000 years? Are we essentially the same? The same fears, hopes, longings...all played out against the background of a war that is the testing ground for glory, and the the killing field for so many...their blood poured out as sacrifices for an ideal of country that lives on in us just as strongly as the Trojans, who died for it as well. Hector says, "fight for your country, that is the best, the only omen!" and it has echoed down the centuries. In the film Troy, Odysseus says to Achilles, "War is young men dying, and old men talking." Achilles says, "What does it matter, now, or fifty years from now?"
